Why practice?

Where to start and where to continue? What's the point of all this?

Rocío Sintas
ONE LIGHT SCHOOL

Rocío: If we want to do something in our lives beyond eating, sleeping and reproducing… Something beyond earning money, going to the beach and drinking beer… If we don’t want to end the day with a headache or the feeling of wasting time… If we want to avoid constant friction with the world around us, and the creation of more and more complaints… We have to practice.

There are dimensions of life that only open up through practice. They are experiences that allow us to discover something new and different about life. When we believe that we already know everything or that we have already seen everything, that is the moment when practice can come into our lives and show us that new, much deeper dimension. That dimension opens like a portal to a new world, giving us the feeling of waking up to a new life. Everything makes sense, plenitude comes to our hearts and we feel fulfilled. We feel connected to everything and everyone. We are in the same life, but it seems that we have landed in another world.

The practice is simple exercises but at the same time very deep. They connect us with the different aspects that form us: the body, to know how to take good care of it; emotions, to understand them and maintain balance; the mind, to know its complexity and direct it towards a good port, and the soul, to recognize its existence and find in it the essence that leads us to peace, wisdom and fulfillment.

For other people, or for the same people at other times, the practice can come into their lives due to the need to heal some aspect. And practice becomes an essential tool to be able to rebalance, learn to relate to others in a harmonious way, make good decisions, self-manage…

Since there are numerous personalities, and with them, belief systems, there are also numerous paths and practices in each one. Depending on each culture or country, one type of practice or another has been developed, according to the mentality of the place. At the One Light school we offer practices from various traditions, at the same time adapting them to the Western mentality, so that beyond methods or techniques, they are truly tools that help us to be better and know ourselves.

I highly encourage you to try. Whatever your needs, it’s time to practice… whenever you feel the calling. Feeling the curiosity, the need or the calling is important.

When we believe that we have already seen it all, that is the moment when practice can reach us and show us that new, much deeper dimension of life.

I have never practiced, what is the most recommended practice for me?

If you have never practiced, it is essential that you receive an initiation into one of the practices from a teacher. Nowadays there is a lot of free material on the internet, you can access multiple practice videos. It is a good way to know superficially what it is about and to know who guides. However, if we really want to “practice” we must contact a teacher to introduce us to the methods. It is important to learn both the theory and the technique well, which is why personal exchange is essential so that we can truly know what the path is about. Otherwise, as happens with great disciplines like yoga today, we will do a few movements and we will think we know what yoga is. The truth is we don’t even know 5% but we think we know, which ultimately, instead of helping, becomes an impediment. Once you have received some training, we will guide you in relation to what is the most recommended practice for you according to your moment or need. There are multiple practices to discover.

I have already taken a course but I can’t maintain consistency, what can I do?

If you have already started but cannot maintain the practice, it is good to join a group so that the motivation of the teacher and the practitioners supports discipline. Otherwise, sometimes other entertainment will take its place and eventually we will lose the effects of the practice and interest will decrease until we finally end up giving it up.

If you are in a group and you still cannot maintain consistency, something we can also ask ourselves is: am I practicing according to the instructions, the requirements? If the practice must be a minimum of 20 minutes and I am doing less and with interruptions, I should try to improve the quality of my practice. Or if I have to do certain movements and I don’t pay enough attention to them, I have to pay attention to making sure the technique is correct. Following the given guidelines is important, as well as the times. Otherwise, they will not give the good results they can give and we will lose motivation.

Sometimes it’s simply a matter of discipline. Motivation is the engine, and discipline is the ship. If we are already practitioners, we must always take these two aspects into account: that the motivation remains alive and that the discipline accompanies us. The boat without a motor does not run, and the motor alone is not of much help either. That’s why we must keep the fire of both of us well. If both are well taken care of, there is no doubt that we will advance. By maintaining a little discipline, we will soon have certain effects or experiences both in practice and in our lives, which will serve as a grip to motivate us to continue practicing.

I am a practitioner, but sometimes I wonder why invest so much time in practice?

If this question comes to mind, perhaps we are not having the desired results and some distrust may be emerging. At that moment, it is good to ask yourself the question: why do I practice? And remember what your objectives are. If we have not achieved them because we have lost enthusiasm, it is time to get motivated again. Remember the great teachers and everything they discovered and managed to achieve in their lives and in the lives of others. Knowing that motivation and determination is important to discover and experience something different. The methods can reveal all the secrets of the Universe, make us one with the source of the Universe, but to do so we must put our hearts into it so that they give extraordinary results. The level of experience we gain through practice will be proportional to the level of involvement we have had with it. We can also remember people who completely recovered their health if what we seek is to heal, investigate the thousands of cases to know what is possible and strengthen our determination.

But if we are putting all our effort and still not achieving what we want, I always recommend consulting us, or consulting your teacher if you have one, to better understand where you are on the path and how to continue growing in the appropriate way.
