Insights about depression
Life is made of ups and downs
Rocío:
In life there are always ups and downs. If we understand that rule, it will not surprise us nor will it hurt when change comes. On the climbs, the majority becomes happy and celebrates. It is in those moments when we must remember the cycle, remember “soon the downhill will come.” In the same way, when we are going down, we must remember “then we will go up.” The problem is when we cling to only one part of the cycle, to be at the top, on the rise. If, regardless of what happens, up or down, we manage to maintain an equanimous, conscious, detached attitude, it will not matter what time of the cycle we are in, we will learn to live it well. The problem is when we completely identify with the moment, without letting it change.
Depression, in part, is those moments of going down. Something happens in our lives that makes us not feel complete. It may be that we are missing a family member, or a close friend, or that we miss our country or city of origin. Or it may be that what we dream of is not realized.
Inner emptiness creates a feeling of “meaninglessness” in our lives. Like entering a hole and losing your way. We must then realize what our priorities are. For some, family is the most important thing, and if something changes in it they feel a great emptiness, because family was what gave life to their heart. For others, work is the most important thing, and if something fails they feel like their life breaks into pieces or there is an immense downturn. For others, it is their body that is most important, and if it changes they feel heartbroken.
The work ahead of us is to realize that the being we are is life no matter what happens. That life goes on no matter what happens. That nature teaches that even if everything changes, life always continues. And that’s how we have to be, like nature. By accepting changes without resisting them we will be like life itself, always alive. If we accept the changes, the decline will soon be an increase. But if we resist change, the descent will be a prolonged, chronic descent, which will only bring more and more depth into it.
If we are in a period of decline, it is important to activate the Yang energy in us. Yang energy is active energy, movement, extroversion, doing, going out, like the sun, it is vitality. We must put it into action to balance the excess of Yin. Yin is passive energy, of inertia, stopping, introspection, not doing, like the night, it is darkness.
Some recommendations would be:
– Do activities that demand the physical use of our body, such as exercise, sports
– Go outside, be in contact with the sun, the wind, the elements, nature
– Meet people, known or unknown, and exchange with them
– Force yourself to enter the energy of laughter or joy at least a few moments a day
– Keep your heart open to be able to flow with changes. This requires trusting life and all its teachings.
I would say that 80% of the population (or more) is depressed to a greater or lesser degree without knowing it. The majority settle for a life that does not fulfill them. And minds are full of unfulfilled dreams. There is nothing that can fulfill us more than fulfilling our dreams or desires. Each wish takes us closer to the heart. No matter how small it is. And it is the heart that gives us the ups and life. That is why it is important to learn to hear it, to understand it. And have the courage to follow its instructions. They say that “if you want to know paradise, you have to leave the paradise of others.”
Wish you courage and stregth!
If the darkness has not led you to the light, it has not yet fulfilled its purpose.
